Description

When you need to fasten wood, plywood or fiber-cement board directly to steel framing without pre-drilling, this Simpson Strong-Tie F12C250FDC Self-Drilling Flat Head Screw With Wings delivers the performance you expect. Wings create a clearance hole in the top material so the shank will not ride up, then break off as the drill point engages steel. The flat countersunk head offers a clean, flush finish and the full-length machine screw threads provide high holding power through sheet material into steel. Crafted of 410 stainless steel with a self-drilling point, this screw is engineered for demanding applications such as wood-to-steel or panel-to-steel installs.

Key Features

  • Winged Self-Drilling Point: Wings ahead of the drill point bore a clearance hole through wood or panel so the shank does not ride up. They break off when the steel is engaged.
  • Flat Countersunk Head with Nibs: The wafer-style head seats flush into the material, while under-head nibs assist with self-countersinking for a clean finish.
  • Full-Length Machine Threads: Provides maximum engagement in the substrate and consistent load transfer from the panel into the steel backing.
  • High-Strength 410 Stainless Steel: Hardened for drilling into steel up to approximately 0.209 inches thick.
  • Square Drive System: Designed for #3 square bit compatibility, improving installation control and tool engagement.

Applications

  • Attaching wood framing, plywood substrates or fiber-cement board to light-gauge steel studs, track or structural backup.
  • Ideal for wood-to-steel connections in interior framing, tenant finish-outs, drywall installations, and furring channel systems.
  • Used in both commercial and residential builds where flush finishes and strong, fast-driving connections are required.
  • Suited for board-to-steel applications with steel up to approximately 0.209 inches in thickness.

Installation

  1. Select the appropriate screw length and diameter for full penetration into the steel and full thread engagement in the substrate.
  2. Use a power driver with a #3 square-drive bit. Set torque to prevent over-driving or damaging the screw head.
  3. Drive the screw perpendicular to the surface. Wings will create a clearance hole and break off as the point reaches the steel.
  4. Continue until the flat head is seated flush with the panel surface. Avoid excessive countersinking.
  5. Ensure the backing material and environment are suitable for 410 stainless steel. Choose a higher corrosion-resistant screw for wet or exterior environments.
  6. Follow all recommended fastener spacing and substrate support guidelines for optimal performance and safety.

Self-Drilling Screws with Seemingly Unlimited Options

Our self-drilling screws come in a wide range of options to tackle everything from metal-to-metal and wood-to-metal fastening to interior framing and exterior cladding. Choose from multiple head styles, drive types, and corrosion-resistant finishes like zinc, galvanized, ceramic-coated, and stainless steel, each built for strength, speed, and long-term performance.

The Right Point for Every Project

Different point types pierce various materials. Standard points handle light- to medium-gauge metal, long points tackle thicker steel, self-piercing points work well in wood or thin metal and winged points clear softer layers before drilling harder substrates, ensuring faster, cleaner and secure installations.
