Safety Harnesses and Body Wear
A full-body harness is the part of your fall protection system that spends the entire shift on the worker, so it needs to do two jobs: hold up in a fall and stay comfortable enough that people actually wear it correctly. Choosing well comes down to the task, where you need D-rings, how the harness fastens, and whether it comes in the right size for each person on the crew.
Match the Harness to the Task
General Fall Arrest
If the job only calls for fall arrest, the key feature is a dorsal (back) D-ring, which is the primary attachment point. Almost every harness has one, so a standard style such as the FallTech Contractor or a vest-style 3M DBI-SALA Delta works across most trades, including roofing.
Positioning and Construction
Positioning harnesses add hip D-rings so a worker can lean back on a connection and keep both hands free, for example when tying rebar or working at a wall. Belted options such as the DBI-SALA Delta Positioning Construction Harness also give you a padded belt to carry the hip D-rings.
Climbing
For ladders and descent control devices, look for a front sternal D-ring in addition to the dorsal one. The FallTech Journeyman Flex climbing harness is one example.
Arc Flash Exposure
Electrical work with arc flash potential calls for arc-rated gear. The 3M DBI-SALA ExoFit XP Arc Flash Rated Harness is designed for that environment. Review the manufacturer's rating information against your site's requirements.
Ironwork and Heavy Tool Loads
Crews who carry a lot of tools often prefer a belted harness so the weight rides on a supportive waist belt instead of pulling on the leg straps. The FallTech FT-Iron belted harness is built with that use in mind.
Hardware: Steel or Aluminum
D-rings, buckles, and adjusters are typically steel or aluminum. Both are strong enough for the job, so the practical difference is weight. Aluminum is lighter on the body over a long day and can help when the worker plus gear is close to the weight limit of a self-retracting lifeline or other connector.
Buckle Styles
- Pass-through (parachute) buckles: the most economical, though they can creep loose over a shift and may need re-tightening.
- Tongue buckles: work like a belt with grommets. They take longer to adjust but hold their setting well.
- Quick-connect buckles: fastest to put on and take off, and the most expensive of the three.
Fit and Sizing
A harness that fits poorly is uncomfortable and can perform worse in a fall, so size each harness to the person wearing it. Many styles are offered in several sizes, and some are UniFit designs that cover a range. For crews with women workers, the FallTech FT-One Fit women's harness is cut with an adjustable hip fit so women do not have to size up to get a comfortable hip.
Comfort Features Worth Having
Look for lanyard keepers, SRL attachment points, padding, and lateral leg straps if long shifts are the norm. Many harnesses also include suspension trauma straps, which give a suspended worker something to stand on to relieve pressure while waiting for rescue. They are also sold on their own, such as the FallTech Suspension Trauma Straps and the 3M DBI-SALA version.
Finish the System
A harness only works as part of a complete setup. Add lanyards, anchorage, horizontal lifelines, and tool tethers from the main fall protection category, or start with a ready-made fall protection kit.
