Lifting & Rigging Shackles

Shackles are a core component in lifting and rigging setups, used to connect slings, chains, wire rope, and other hardware with confidence. From anchor shackles to chain shackles and beyond, these fittings are built to handle demanding applications like lifting, pulling, and securing loads.

With multiple designs, sizes, and load ratings available, selecting the right shackle can feel overwhelming if you’re not sure what to look for.

To help simplify the process, we’ve broken down the key basics and differences below.

Types of Shackles

While shackles all serve the same basic purpose of connecting rigging components, the right choice depends on several key factors. The type of sling you’re using, its width, the working environment, and the load requirements all play a role in determining the best fit for your setup.

To match these different needs, shackles are available in a range of styles, each designed for specific applications:

bow anchor shackle type

Anchor Shackle

Anchor shackles, also known as bow shackles, feature a wide, rounded shape that allows for greater flexibility in lifting setups. This design makes them ideal for applications where loads may shift or come from multiple angles, reducing the risk of excessive side loading.

Their larger opening also makes it easier to connect wider slings and straps, giving them an edge in more versatile rigging scenarios.

That added flexibility does come with a tradeoff. Compared to chain shackles, anchor shackles typically have a lower working load limit, making it important to match them carefully to your application.

chain shackle type

Chain / D-Shackle

Chain shackles, often referred to as D-shackles, are designed with a narrower “D” shape that provides a more direct load path. This streamlined design makes them well-suited for applications where the load is applied in a straight line. Because of their shape, D-shackles are built to handle higher loads in-line, but they are not intended for significant side or racking forces, which can cause stress on the shackle and lead to deformation.

For more specialized applications, variations like Wide D and Long D shackles are also available. Wide D shackles offer additional space for larger slings, while Long D shackles provide extra clearance with an extended loop. These options are commonly available in stainless steel, making them a strong choice for marine or high-moisture environments where corrosion resistance is critical.

wide body shackle type

Wide Body Shackles

Wide body shackles are designed with an expanded bow, increasing the contact area between the shackle and the sling. This larger radius helps distribute the load more evenly, reducing wear and stress on the sling during use. By minimizing pressure points, wide body shackles can help extend sling life and, in many cases, remove the need for additional hardware like a thimble.

sling saver shackle type

Sling Saver Shackle

Web sling shackles are built with an expanded bow radius, helping improve sling performance and efficiency. By increasing the contact surface, they can boost sling efficiency by 15% or more compared to standard configurations.

They’re specifically engineered for use with synthetic web slings, making them an ideal choice for applications where protecting the sling and maximizing performance are critical.

Pin Types

The type of pin used to secure a shackle is just as important as the shackle itself. Different pin styles offer varying levels of security, ease of use, and suitability depending on your application. Options include loose pins, captive pins, round pins, screw pins, and bolt-type pins, each designed to meet specific rigging and lifting requirements.

shackle screw pin

Screw pin shackles are a popular choice thanks to their quick and convenient design. The threaded pin allows for fast attachment and removal, making them ideal for applications where connections need to be made or adjusted frequently.

shackle round pin

Round pin shackles are secured with a removable cotter pin, providing an added level of retention during use. They’re a solid choice for applications where the shackle may experience movement, rotation, or torque. They are not recommended for setups where the pin will be exposed to axial loading, as this can compromise the connection over time.

shackle captive pin

Captive pin shackles are designed with a pin that remains permanently attached to the shackle body, reducing the risk of it becoming lost or misplaced during use. This feature is especially valuable in marine and over-water applications, where a dropped pin can quickly become unrecoverable. By keeping the pin secured, captive designs help maintain safety and minimize downtime on the job.

shackle bolt type pin

Bolt-type pin shackles are best suited for long-term or semi-permanent installations where a secure connection is critical. Their design includes a nut and cotter pin, helping prevent accidental loosening during use.

Industry Leading Shackle Brands

We offer a broad selection of heavy-duty shackles from both domestic and import manufacturers, all built to meet applicable federal specifications.

Each shackle is clearly marked with its working load limit, allowing for quick identification and confident use on the job.
