Self-Retracting Lifelines and Personal Fall Limiters
Self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) and personal fall limiters are a strong choice when workers need to move around at height without constantly managing slack. Unlike a fixed-length shock-absorbing lanyard, an SRL pays out and reels in line as the user moves, keeping the line snug and the work area clear of trip hazards.
How an SRL Works
An SRL has a housing that holds a spring-loaded drum and a length of lifeline wound around it. Normal movement pulls line out and lets it retract smoothly. If the user falls, the housing brakes the line almost immediately, which keeps the fall short and reduces the force on the body. The user then hangs from the device until they can be rescued, so a rescue plan and rescue equipment belong in the conversation too.
Personal fall limiters are compact versions with shorter lifelines, built to mount directly on the harness rather than at the anchor.
Understanding Class and Type
SRLs are sorted by class and type under the ANSI fall protection standards, and the combination you need depends on your anchor location and the edge conditions at the work area.
Class
- Class 1 SRLs are for anchor points at or above the dorsal D-ring on the harness.
- Class 2 leading edge SRLs can be used with anchors at or above the D-ring and also with anchors up to roughly five feet below it. All leading edge rated devices fall into this class.
Type
- SRL: a standard unit that anchors overhead or at the work surface.
- SRL-P: a unit that mounts on the harness, commonly called a personal fall limiter.
- SRL-R: a unit that includes built-in rescue and retrieval capability.
What Is a Leading Edge?
A leading edge is the unprotected edge of a walking or working surface that sits at least six feet above a lower level. If a fall occurs there, the lifeline can be dragged across the edge, which stresses the line more than a clean overhead fall. Class 2 leading edge devices are tested for that kind of exposure. Do not use a Class 1 SRL where the anchor sits below the D-ring or where the line may pass over an edge. Confirm the manufacturer's rating for your exact situation.
Choosing an SRL
Begin with the application: where the anchor will be, whether leading edge exposure exists, and how much working length you need. Then compare lifeline material, end fittings, housing weight, and the weight capacity. The capacity should cover the worker plus tools and gear, so weigh the fully equipped user and check the rating on the label.
Lifeline Material
Galvanized steel cable is the tough choice. It stands up well to abrasion, rough surfaces, and harsher conditions, though it is the heaviest option. Synthetic lifelines made from webbing are lighter and gentler on delicate surfaces, and they suit cleaner, less demanding environments. A third approach is FallTech EdgeCore, which uses a Kevlar-based construction in a UV-resistant jacket. FallTech describes it as substantially lighter than comparable galvanized cable with a higher break strength, and you can see it in options like the EdgeCore FT-X LE single-leg SRL.
End Fittings
Snap hooks are the most common, and swivel versions help prevent twisting. Rebar hooks hook over exposed rebar. Carabiners work like snap hooks but let you clip additional connectors to the same anchor. Many units also include an indicator that shows if the device has been loaded in a fall. Steel and aluminum versions are available, so match the fitting to your anchor type.

Round Out the System
An SRL still needs a compatible harness, anchor, and a plan for what happens after a fall. Explore safety harnesses, anchorage, connectors, and tool tethers, or return to the main fall protection category. If you are unsure which SRL fits your site, our team can help you compare options.
