Synthetic Self-Retracting Lifelines

Synthetic SRLs replace steel cable with webbing or a high-strength fiber construction. The result is a lighter, more flexible lifeline that is easier on the worker and kinder to the surfaces it touches. They are a good option for jobs where weight matters and where corrosion or heavy abrasion is not the main concern.

When Synthetic Makes Sense

• Workers wear or carry the unit for long stretches and want less weight on the harness.
• The lifeline may brush against finished or easily marked surfaces such as painted steel, aluminum, or glass.
• The environment is dry, clean, and free of caustic exposure.

For corrosive, abrasive, or high-wear environments, consider a galvanized cable SRL instead.

Two Kinds of Synthetic Lifeline

Web Lifelines

Web SRLs are the lightest and most economical. They work well in moderate conditions. Look at the PSG Guardian Halo 11' web SRL or the 3M Protecta Rebel 11' web SRL.

EdgeCore Lifelines

FallTech EdgeCore combines Kevlar-based cables with a UV-resistant composite jacket. According to FallTech, it is about 40 percent lighter than a comparable 3/16" galvanized cable while offering a higher break strength, which is why it appears in many leading edge rated models like the FT-X LE tie-back twin-leg SRL and the twin-leg model with carabiners.

Selection Tips

Check the class and type, working length, user weight capacity, and the fall clearance needed under the work area. If edges are present, confirm the unit is rated for leading edge use, and look in our Class 2 collection. For overhead-only anchors, Class 1 SRLs may be a match.
