Flatbed Winches for Trailers
A flatbed winch mounts along a trailer's side rail or under its frame and tightens winch straps to secure cargo. It's the backbone of a complete tie down system. The strap passes through a slot in the winch, and a winch bar inserted into a round hole tightens the strap and adds enough tension to keep the cargo from moving.
A properly installed flatbed winch gives you controlled tensioning for safer loads, faster securement when loading and unloading, and reliable performance over long hauls and rough conditions.
Types of Flatbed Winches
Sliding Winches
Sliding winches are the go-to for mixed loads, since you adapt to each new setup by moving the winch along the trailer. They work with double L or C channel winch track, and tension locks them in place.
-
Installation: slides into track attached to your flatbed.
-
Flexibility: fully adjustable along the trailer's length.
-
Best for: mixed or unpredictable loads.
Weld-On Winches
Weld-on winches are permanently affixed to the trailer, a good fit for drivers who want a fixed securement point they can count on every time. They come in two mounting styles: side-mount, installed on the side of the trailer frame, and bottom-mount, installed on the underside.
-
Installation: welded directly to the trailer.
-
Flexibility: fixed position.
-
Best for: consistent loads or standardized setups.
Bolt-On / Portable Winches
Bolt-on winches also handle varying load types, since they can be removed and reattached as needed. They suit operators who want adjustability without a permanent setup.
-
Installation: bolted onto the trailer (hardware included for all 4" styles).
-
Flexibility: can be repositioned or replaced as needed.
-
Best for: changing setups without welding.
Lashing Winches
Lashing winches include a quick-release option, so you can pull the webbing out fast. They're generally used with 2" webbing and tighten with a wrench.
-
Installation: bolted or welded onto the trailer (hardware not included).
-
Flexibility: depending on installation, can be repositioned or replaced.
-
Best for: car tie downs, hoop buildings and ag buildings, and utility vehicles.
Stake Pocket Winches
PortaWinches turn stake pockets into strap anchor points, so you can tie down a load at any stake pocket on the trailer and adjust your setup for different loads easily. Choose inward offset, which allows clearance for track-mounted tarps, or outward offset.
-
Installation: inserts into standard stake pockets (not compatible with tapered).
-
Flexibility: can be installed anywhere along the trailer where a stake pocket exists.
-
Best for: cases where other installation types aren't feasible.
Safety and Compliance
Quality flatbed winches help build a dependable tie down system by maintaining consistent strap tension throughout transit, reducing load shifting and cargo damage, supporting DOT and FMCSA securement requirements, and improving driver confidence and efficiency.
Compatible Equipment
Pair your winches with winch straps, winch track, and winch bars. We also carry trailer winch accessories, including strap winders and a cap that turns any winch into a ratcheting winch.
