Rotation-Resistant Wire Rope

Rotation-resistant wire rope is engineered to minimize twisting and load spin during lifting operations. By manufacturing the inner strands in the opposite lay direction of the outer strands, the rope generates opposing rotational forces that help offset torque under load. This design provides improved load stability and better control when lifting free-hanging loads with cranes, hoists, and other overhead equipment.

Rotation-Resistant Wire Rope Classifications

The degree of rotation resistance is determined by the wire rope's construction, including the number of strand layers and the number of strands in the outer layer. Rotation-resistant wire ropes are grouped into categories based on these design characteristics and their ability to resist twisting while under load.

Fasteners Plus offers Category 2 and Category 3 rotation-resistant wire rope constructions. Neither category is intended for use with swivels unless specifically approved by the equipment manufacturer and applicable industry standards.

Category 2 Rotation-Resistant Wire Rope

Category 2 wire ropes feature two layers of strands with more than ten outer strands, providing a high level of resistance to rotation. Popular constructions such as 19x19 and 19x7 help maintain load stability during lifting and are commonly used in crane, hoist, and material handling applications where minimizing load spin is important.

Category 3 Spin-Resistant Wire Rope

Category 3 wire ropes, including the 8x19 construction, incorporate nine or fewer outer strands. While they offer less rotation resistance than Category 2 designs, they still provide improved resistance to twisting compared to conventional wire rope constructions. These ropes are well suited for applications where moderate rotation control is sufficient while maintaining an excellent balance of strength and flexibility.
