Description

The Simpson Strong-Drive X Metal Screws are engineered for fast, efficient fastening into steel. With a self-drilling point and high-strength steel construction, these screws eliminate the need for pre-drilling - saving you time while ensuring consistent, high-performance connections.

Whether you're fastening steel framing, sheet metal, or mechanical components, the X screw delivers strong shear values and precise installation every time. Designed to meet demanding code requirements, it's the go-to solution for light- to medium-gauge metal-to-metal connections on jobsites where speed and strength matter.

Key Features

  • Self-Drilling Point: Drives directly into steel—no pilot hole required.
  • High-Strength Steel Construction: Built to deliver exceptional shear and tensile strength in metal connections.
  • Heat-Treated for Toughness: Hardened to reduce snapping or stripping during installation.
  • Precise Thread Design: Promotes fast starts and clean, secure engagement with steel substrates.
  • Low-Profile Head Options: Ideal for minimizing surface snagging and flush installations in tight spaces.
  • Code-Approved: Qualified under ICC-ES ESR-3006 for cold-formed steel framing applications.

Common Applications

  • Steel framing connections (e.g., track to stud, joist to joist)
  • HVAC ductwork and hangers
  • Electrical and mechanical fastening to steel
  • Sheet metal assembly and panel installation
  • Industrial racking or equipment installs

Installation Tips

  1. Choose the right size for your gauge of steel. The X screw comes in multiple lengths to accommodate different applications.
  2. Use a high-torque drill or impact driver—the self-drilling point is optimized for fast penetration with minimal resistance.
  3. Avoid overdriving, especially in thin-gauge steel. Stop once the head seats flush to avoid strip-out or distortion.
  4. For high-volume jobs, pair with a magnetic bit holder or collated system for improved speed and precision.

Self-Drilling Screws with Seemingly Unlimited Options

Our self-drilling screws come in a wide range of options to tackle everything from metal-to-metal and wood-to-metal fastening to interior framing and exterior cladding. Choose from multiple head styles, drive types, and corrosion-resistant finishes like zinc, galvanized, ceramic-coated, and stainless steel, each built for strength, speed, and long-term performance.

The Right Point for Every Project

Different point types pierce various materials. Standard points handle light- to medium-gauge metal, long points tackle thicker steel, self-piercing points work well in wood or thin metal and winged points clear softer layers before drilling harder substrates, ensuring faster, cleaner and secure installations.

These screws can really skate! They walk off when drilling at even a slight angle

(This review is to apply the correct star rating intended for the previous review)

I'll preface this review with the information that I'm a fan of the other Strong-Tie products we've purchased for this owner-build house project. We are currently building a steel frame residence (cold formed steel with metal studs ranging from 20 to 16 gauge).

Because of the open C channel design of the metal studs it is not possible, in most cases, to hold the screw at a perfect 90 degree angle. These self-drilling screws have a propensity to skate when held at even a small angle of attack - as little as 75 degrees.

Prior to ordering these Simpson Strong-Tie screws, we were using identical size Grabber self-drilling #10 x 3/4" screws that performed much better when coming into the work surface at an angle.

Had I known these Strong-Tie screws have this tendency to wander off from the intended target point, I would have stayed with the Grabber product. I now regret this purchase.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us feedback and we are sorry to hear you are not satisfied with this product. Quality of our products is very important to us and customer reviews help us to improve our processes. If you wish to discuss this further or have any questions, please email customerservice@fastnersplus.com and we would be happy to look into this for you.
