Description

The Simpson Strong-Tie BVLZ Brick Veneer Ledger Connector is engineered to safely attach a deck ledger to an existing home with a brick veneer exterior. Traditional deck ledger connections are not designed to bear against brick veneer alone. The BVLZ transfers deck loads past the veneer and into the structural framing of the home, helping create a code-compliant, structurally sound deck attachment.

Fabricated with a durable ZMAX galvanized coating for exterior environments, the BVLZ is designed for long-term corrosion resistance in deck applications. This system utilizes two 14" Strong-Drive SDWH Timber-Hex HDG tension screws and six Strong-Drive SD Connector shear screws to create a secure connection that resists both vertical and lateral loads. Ideal for deck additions where brick veneer is present, the BVLZ offers a professional-grade solution backed by Simpson Strong-Tie engineering and testing.

Key Features

  • Designed for Brick Veneer Applications: Transfers deck ledger loads through brick veneer and into structural framing.
  • Code-Compliant Deck Ledger Solution: Helps meet modern deck attachment requirements.
  • ZMAX® Galvanized Coating: Enhanced corrosion resistance for exterior and treated lumber environments.
  • High-Strength Fastener System: Uses two 14" Strong-Drive® SDWH Timber-Hex HDG tension screws and six Strong-Drive SD Connector shear screws.
  • Resists Tension and Shear Forces: Engineered to support deck ledger loads safely and effectively.
  • Professional-Grade Engineering: Backed by Simpson Strong-Tie testing and performance data.

Applications

  • Attaching deck ledgers to homes with brick veneer exteriors
  • Deck additions and retrofits
  • Residential wood deck construction
  • Projects requiring ledger attachment that bypasses non-structural veneer

Installation

  • Position the BVLZ to align with structural framing behind the brick veneer.
  • Install two 14" Strong-Drive SDWH Timber-Hex HDG tension screws to transfer loads into the band joist or rim board.
  • Install six Strong-Drive SD Connector shear screws into the ledger as specified.
  • Follow Simpson Strong-Tie installation guidelines for spacing, fastener placement, and load requirements.
  • Ensure proper flashing and waterproofing practices are used in accordance with building codes.

Proper fastener installation and alignment with structural framing are critical to achieving the intended load performance.

Hopefully will pass Canadian building code soon.

Great product. I deviated from install instructions as far as clearance holes go, and installation process, just to make things go smoother. I feel installation instructions should put link to deck joist load spans to determine centre distances. Especially for second floor decks, there should be mention of existing loading on large window or door openings, to make certain you do not overload existing headers. For larger decks, existing headers may have to be beefed up. I feel that a DIY'r could easily overload headers if building a large deck over say a 12' wide sliding door or window. Best always to get some type of engineer involved. If you're not sure if header size, maybe break open the wall to find out exactly the sizes. Great product overall when used correctly.
