Choose the Right Binder

Ratchet Binders

Ratcheting handles allow controlled tensioning and store very little energy in the handle, which helps reduce snapback risk. Great for heavy equipment and frequent tightening cycles.

• Common pairings: 5/16" to 3/8" binders with Grade 70 or Grade 80 chain, and heavy-duty models for 3/8" Grade 70 or larger.

Lever Binders

Compact and fast to apply. Standard lever snap binders are widely used, and recoil-less designs add an extra margin of safety by minimizing kickback during release.

• Examples: 5/16" lever binder WLL around 5,400 lbs, 3/8" lever binder WLL around 9,200 lbs. Always confirm WLL on the product page.

Chain Grades, Sizes, and Working Load Limits

Transport chain and binders must be matched correctly. Grade 70 is the workhorse for general flatbed tie-downs, while Grade 80 and Grade 100 deliver higher capacity for demanding loads. Many Grade 100 options meet or exceed NACM and ASTM A973 requirements. Always check your chain’s size and grade, then select a binder with an equal or higher compatible rating.
