Heavy-Duty Recovery Straps and Towing Straps

Heavy-duty towing straps and recovery straps provide dependable pulling solutions for roadside assistance, off-road recovery, towing operations, and emergency vehicle kits. Although these products are sometimes grouped together, each strap is designed for a different type of pull.

Recovery straps, also called snatch straps, feature looped eyes and stretch under tension to help free vehicles stuck in mud, sand, snow, or ditches. Tow straps typically have hooks or other end fittings and are intended for moving vehicles that can roll freely.

Tow Straps vs. Recovery Straps

Selecting the correct strap is essential for a safe, controlled pull. A tow strap should only be used to move a freely rolling vehicle. It is not designed to recover a vehicle that is stuck or immobilized.

Most recovery straps are made from nylon, which stretches and stores kinetic energy during the initial pull. This controlled stretch helps generate the additional force needed to free a stuck vehicle while reducing the sudden shock placed on the vehicles and attachment points.

Towing straps are generally made from polyester, which stretches less than nylon. The limited stretch helps provide a steady connection when towing a vehicle, but it does not provide the energy absorption needed for a snatch recovery. Using a hook-ended tow strap to recover a stuck vehicle can overload the strap or hardware and create a serious projectile hazard.

Made in the USA Recovery Straps

Our Made in the USA recovery straps are built for demanding vehicle and equipment recovery applications. Their looped eyes provide versatile connection points without permanently attached metal hooks.

Select heavy-duty snatch straps feature CORDURA wear protection around the eyes. This durable material helps protect high-contact areas from abrasion and can extend the service life of the webbing when the strap is used and maintained correctly.

Recovery Strap Working Load Limits

Recovery straps are available in multiple widths and ply configurations to accommodate vehicles and equipment of different sizes. A three-ply or four-ply recovery strap can provide strength comparable to a wider one-ply or two-ply strap while maintaining a narrower profile.

Options are available for UTVs and recreational vehicles, passenger cars and light trucks, semi trucks, and heavy equipment. Always verify the strap's labeled working load limit and break strength before use.

How to Choose a Recovery Strap

A common selection guideline is to choose a recovery strap with a break strength of approximately twice the weight of the stuck vehicle. Always follow the strap manufacturer's recommendations and account for vehicle weight, recovery conditions, attachment points, and every component used in the assembly.

A strap that is significantly stronger than the application requires may not stretch enough to provide the intended snatching action. Choose a properly sized nylon recovery strap that can stretch within its rated capacity without becoming overloaded.

Towing and Recovery Strap Care

Regular inspection, cleaning, and proper storage help towing straps and snatch straps deliver reliable performance over time.

  • Inspect the entire strap, stitching, eyes, and hardware before every use.
  • Remove any strap with cuts, tears, burns, broken stitching, excessive abrasion, or other visible damage from service.
  • Protect the webbing from sharp edges and rough surfaces.
  • Store straps away from direct sunlight because prolonged UV exposure can weaken the webbing.
  • Keep straps away from excessive heat and do not use them at temperatures above 194 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Clean dirty webbing by rinsing along the direction of the fibers with water. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Never exceed the labeled working load limit of the strap or any component in the recovery assembly.

How to Connect a Vehicle Recovery Strap

Attach recovery straps only to secure, manufacturer-approved vehicle recovery points. Never connect a strap to a tow ball, bumper, suspension component, or another point that is not rated for vehicle recovery.

Screw pin anchor shackles can provide a removable connection between a recovery strap and a suitable recovery point. Confirm that the shackle, strap, and vehicle attachment points are compatible and properly rated. The component with the lowest working load limit determines the capacity of the complete assembly.

Galvanized anchor shackles are available in sizes ranging from 1/4 inch through 1-1/2 inches. Review anchor shackle sizes and specifications to select hardware suited to the strap and recovery application.

Recovery Strap Safety Tips

  • Read the product instructions and inspect all equipment before beginning the pull.
  • Use only secure recovery points that are rated for the forces involved.
  • Keep the strap flat and free from knots, twists, debris, and contact with sharp edges.
  • Never exceed the rated capacity of the strap, shackles, or attachment points.
  • Keep bystanders at least one full strap length away from the vehicles during recovery.
  • Make sure drivers understand the recovery plan and use clear signals before applying tension.
  • Stop immediately if the strap shifts, hardware becomes misaligned, or an attachment point shows signs of damage.

More Towing and Vehicle Recovery Equipment

Complete your towing or recovery setup with tow strap shackles, tree saver straps, wheel nets, tow dolly basket straps, wheel straps, auto-hauling tie-downs, and other tow truck accessories. Choose every component according to its rated capacity, intended application, and compatibility with the rest of the assembly.
