Rope Grabs and Cable Grabs

A rope grab (or cable grab) rides on a vertical lifeline and locks onto it if the worker falls. The worker can climb up, work in position, and come back down with the device following along, so there is no need to move an anchor every few feet. They are common in roofing, tower, and vertical access work.

How a Grab Works

The device clamps around the lifeline and slides freely during normal movement. A sudden load makes the cam bite down and stop the slide, holding the worker on the line. Grabs are matched to the lifeline they are made for, so the rope or cable type and diameter must be a fit. For example, the FallTech hinged rope grab is made for 5/8" synthetic rope lifelines and uses a hinged body so it can be installed on the line.

Choosing One

• Lifeline match: use only the lifeline diameter and material the grab is rated for.
• Orientation features: look for anti-inversion designs that help prevent putting it on backward.
• Connection style: some grabs attach directly to the harness through a short lanyard, such as the 3' lanyard with trailing rope grab.
