Pewag Anti-Theft Security Chain

Pewag security chain is built to deter theft, whether you're locking up equipment overnight or protecting high-value assets on a jobsite. Its cut resistance comes from two things: very hard steel and a link shape that gives cutting tools little to grab.

What Makes a Security Chain Cut Resistant

Steel Hardness

Steel hardness is commonly measured on the Rockwell scale (HRC), which records how deep a dent a measured weight leaves in the metal. A good rating for security chain is 56 HRC and above. All three Pewag security chains rate 62 HRC. The 9/32" and 3/8" chains are hardened to 62 HRC 10% deep, and the 1/2" chain is hardened to 62 HRC 6% deep. That's harder than most bolt cutters, which tend to rate around 59-60.

Square Link Profile

The links also have a square profile. A hardened square link creates a larger contact area, which keeps bolt cutters from getting the grip they need to start cutting. An anti-corrosion electro-galvanized finish adds durability.

No chain or lock makes theft impossible, but hardened steel and a square profile make a cut much harder to start and finish.

Security Chain Locks

Heavy-duty chain needs a heavy-duty lock. Viro locks are built to work with Pewag square chain, with a design intended to resist tools that cut or open a lock. Each lock includes two Viro top security profile nickel-plated brass keys. Keep the included key code card, since it lets you add duplicate keys or replace lost ones. Contact our sales team for more information. Each lock fits a specific chain size:

Care Tips

  • Store indoors, or keep the chain dry when possible, to prevent corrosion.
  • Clean off grit and road grime regularly.
  • Lubricate occasionally for smoother handling.

Security Chain FAQs

Is square chain better than round chain? Square chain gives bolt cutters less to grip because of its flat-sided, hardened profile, which makes it more resistant to cutting attempts than round chain.

Can I cut a security chain with bolt cutters? Our security chains are hardened specifically to resist bolt cutters. Pewag chain rates 62 HRC, harder than most bolt cutters, which makes cutting it much more difficult, though no chain is uncuttable.

What lock should I use with security chain? We recommend a Viro lock, or another high-security padlock with a hardened shackle.
