Wire Rope Slings

Socket Wire Rope Slings

Socket Wire Rope Slings

Wire rope slings serve many lifting and rigging needs. Wire rope can act as a static support, for example on suspension bridges or towers, or it can help lift and move heavy loads when attached to a crane. A socket wire rope sling has a socket fitted to the end of the wire rope, and the way that socket is attached depends on its type. Sockets are named for how they're attached.

Spelter Sockets

A spelter socket, also called a poured socket, is attached by pouring molten zinc or resin into the socket, where it hardens and holds the socket in place. Spelter socket slings deliver 100% efficiency of the rope's breaking strength, but the wires can experience fatigue where they enter the socket.

Swage Sockets

A swage socket is attached with a hydraulic machine and special dies. It resists wire fatigue better where the cable meets the socket, but it doesn't always match the breaking strength efficiency of a spelter socket.

Open vs. Closed Sockets

Both spelter and swage sockets come in open and closed styles. An open socket has a pin that attaches the sling to another fitting. A closed socket has a hole made for a pin or bolt. The two styles suit different lifting and rigging applications.
