Wire Rope Slings

Spelter Socket Slings

Spelter Socket Slings

A wire rope sling used with a crane needs a termination at the end, either an eye or a fitting that connects to the load. A socket is one kind of termination, and a spelter socket, also called a poured socket, is a highly efficient one.

How a Spelter Socket Works

The socket is attached to the wire rope by pouring molten zinc or resin into it and letting the material harden to hold the socket on the cable. The result is a termination with 100% efficiency of the rope's breaking strength.

Spelter vs. Swage Sockets

Spelter sockets can deliver more efficiency of rope breaking strength than a swage socket. A swage socket, in turn, resists fatigue better where the cable and socket meet. Which one fits depends on whether your priority is rated efficiency or fatigue resistance at the joint.

Open vs. Closed Sockets

Spelter sockets come in open and closed styles. A closed socket is rounded with a hole for a pin or bolt. An open socket has a pin built in so it can attach to another type of fitting. Each suits different applications, and we carry all three configurations:

Size and Capacity

A spelter socket sling's working load limit depends on the socket type and the rope's length and diameter. Slings come in diameters from 1/4" to 1-1/2" and lengths from 2 to 20 feet, with working load limits ranging from 0.68 to 22.8 tons.
