Crane Personnel Baskets for Working at Height

Some work sites cannot be reached with a ladder, scaffold, or lift. When a crane is the only practical way to put a worker in position, the platform has to be built for people, not repurposed from a material carrier. This collection features M&W personnel lifting baskets made in the USA, with rated capacities that start at 500 lbs. and top out at 2,000 lbs. Each basket is offered with a test weight and suspension bridle.

Four Capacities to Choose From

The working load limit has to cover the people, tools, and materials in the basket together. The basket's own weight, and the weight of the rigging, also count against the crane's capacity, so check the weight listed for the model you choose. The 500 lb. listing, for example, shows a basket weight of 1,465 lbs.

What the Listings Describe

Non-slip floor

A diamond plate steel floor gives workers a non-slip surface underfoot.

Enclosed sides and grab rail

The sides are solid metal up to the intermediate rail, with a grab rail running around the full perimeter.

Removable roof

A solid, bolt-on roof keeps weather off the occupant. It can come off when the basket is used indoors.

Access door

The door swings inward and locks, with a heavy-duty hinge and latch.

Finish and kit

The finish is safety yellow for visibility. Each kit includes a pin-on removable test weight and a 4-leg suspension bridle with bolt-type anchor shackles.

Standards and Documentation

The M&W listing states that these baskets meet or exceed ASME B30.23 specifications and are individually load tested. It also states that the solid, removable roof satisfies OSHA 1926.1431(e)(10) and that OSHA certification paperwork is included. Check the product page for the exact basket you buy, and keep the paperwork with the basket. Compliance depends on how the basket is used as well as how it is built, so your lift still has to meet the rules that apply to your site.

Before You Lift Anyone

Hoisting personnel with a crane is a regulated activity. Treat these points as a starting list, not a substitute for the regulations or the manufacturer's instructions:

• Use a personnel basket only for personnel lifting, and only as the manufacturer directs. Do not use it as a material carrier.
• Follow OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1431 and ASME B30.23, along with your employer's and the crane manufacturer's requirements.
• Use the supplied test weight for the required proof testing, and finish every trial lift and pre-use inspection your rules require before anyone goes up.
• Have a qualified person plan the lift, and make sure the crane, rigging, and signaling are suited to it.

• Inspect the basket and rigging before every use, and take damaged equipment out of service.

These baskets are made for crane lifts. Do not use them on a forklift.
