Plate Lifting Hooks for Moving Steel Plate

Plate lifting hooks give a crane or hoist a purpose-built way to pick up steel plate and other heavy flat stock. They suit fabrication shops, steel yards, and any other place where plate has to be moved or set in position. This collection features Grade 100 plate lifting hooks from M&W, made in the USA, in three sizes with working load limits from 4,300 lbs. to 15,000 lbs.

Choose a Size

Hook size Working load limit Grade
9/32" 4,300 lbs. 100
3/8" 8,800 lbs. 100
1/2" 15,000 lbs. 100

Start with the weight of the plate, then size up so the working load limit covers the full load with room to spare. The rating applies to the hook as marked. It does not cover the other components in the rig, and the lifting arrangement can change how much load each point carries. Plate lifts often use more than one lifting point, so account for all of them.

Documentation

According to the product listings, every hook is proof loaded on its own, in line with OSHA requirements, and arrives with certification paperwork. File that paperwork with your lifting records, and read the listing for the size you order to see exactly what is included.

Lifting Plate Safely

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for how the hook is attached and rigged.
  • Stay within the rated capacity stamped or marked on the hook.
  • Plan the lift for the plate's weight, size, and center of gravity so it hangs level and stays under control.
  • Keep people out from under the load and out of the path of travel.
  • Bring in a qualified person for critical or unusual lifts, and follow the OSHA rules and site requirements that apply.

Inspect Before Every Lift

  • Check for cracks, bends, nicks, wear, and corrosion.
  • Confirm the capacity markings are readable.
  • Remove any hook that is damaged or deformed from service.
  • Store hooks clean and dry, away from moisture and impact.

Other Ways to Lift Plate

Depending on the plate and the lift, a different attachment may be the better fit. Plate clamps grip the plate edge and come as vertical or horizontal lifters. For long plates, a plate lifting beam spreads the lift across more than one point. You can also compare options across the full lifting clamps category and the lifting beams and spreader bars collection.

Finish the Rig

Plate hooks are one part of the lifting chain. Add wire rope slings, nylon lifting slings, or chain, along with shackles and other rigging hardware, and put sling protection between a sling and any sharp plate edge. Browse the rest of our material handling equipment for related lifting devices.

Plate Lifting Hooks FAQs

What size plate lifting hook do I need?

Choose by the weight of the load. Pick a hook whose working load limit covers the whole lift, and check the manufacturer's instructions for how it should be rigged.

Are these hooks made in the USA?

Yes. The M&W plate lifting hooks listed here are made in the USA.

Do the hooks come with certification?

The listings say certification paperwork ships with each hook.

Can I use a plate lifting hook to lift people?

No. Plate lifting hooks are for lifting material only.

Should I use a hook or a plate clamp?

It depends on the plate, how it is lifted, and the rigging you have. Review the manufacturer's instructions for each, and compare options in our plate clamps collection.
