Lifting Slings

Sling Protection

Lifting Strap Protectors

A sling protector does two jobs at once: it shields your sling from the wear of the job, and it shields your load from the sling itself. Both sides of that trade save you money, since a protected load means fewer damage claims, and a protected sling lasts a lot longer before it needs replacing.

Protection comes in a few tiers. Most of our slings already carry a baseline level of abrasion resistance. Above that sits protection-rated, cut-resistant gear, which meaningfully cuts the odds of sling failure from edge exposure when used correctly. One thing worth being upfront about: "cut-resistant" is as far as it goes. Nothing on the market is truly cut-proof.

Every Sling Needs Protection

Whether you're rigging with nylon, polyester, plasma, chain or wire rope, the standard doesn't change: "Slings in contact with edges, corners, protrusions, or abrasive surfaces shall be protected with a material of sufficient strength, thickness, and construction to prevent damage." - ASME B30.9 (2021) 9-5.10.4(d)

In practice, that means adding a sling softener anywhere the sling touches your load or your rigging hardware, including at the lift points and at load edges that sit above where the sling actually hooks up.

LiftGuard™ Magnetic Edge Protectors

LiftGuard™ protectors skip wraparound entirely and attach straight to the corners of your load with magnets, recessed slightly so they won't mark the surface. They're lightweight, hold up well against abrasion, and work across a temperature range of -20°F to 220°F. Three configurations cover different jobs: medium-duty for synthetic slings, heavy-duty for wire rope or chain, and grooved for attaching directly to steel plates or I-beams.

CornerMax® Cut-Resistant Sleeves

When 90-degree edge contact isn't a given, CornerMax® sleeves flex to meet the load instead. Built from high-tech Dyneema® fiber, they're rated for cut resistance and conform around curved or round surfaces where a flat corner sleeve wouldn't sit right. They're not built for wire rope or chain slings.

Fit isn't one-size-fits-all here. Measure your round sling's circumference and match it to the inside circumference figures below, and remember the entire sling gets inserted into the sleeve to form an eye at each end, so you're measuring both sides of the sling together, not just one.

Wear Pads: Sewn, Quick, and Tubular

Beyond LiftGuard™ and CornerMax®, wear pad sleeves slide along the sling's length for easy placement and inspection. Choose nylon webbing for general protection or Cordura® where abrasion resistance matters more, in one of three constructions: sewn for long-term use on a single sling, quick for fast Velcro® installation and removal, or tubular, also Velcro®-secured but shaped to maximize usable contact area.

Sling Protection FAQs

How does sling protection help extend sling life? A protective sleeve sits between the sling and the load, so it takes the friction and pressure that would otherwise wear directly on the sling.

Are there sling protectors designed for sharp edges? Yes. CornerMax® sleeves are engineered specifically for sharp-edge applications, using reinforced Dyneema® fiber to resist cutting and punctures from metal edges, fabricated steel, and concrete corners.

Does sling protection affect sling capacity? No, it doesn't add capacity. What it does is help preserve the sling's existing strength by preventing the kind of damage that weakens it over time. Always follow the sling manufacturer's working load limit and lifting guidelines regardless of what protection you're using.

How often should sling protection be inspected? Before every lift. Pull any protector from service if you spot cuts or tears, excessive abrasion, burn damage, crushed sections, missing components, or chemical or UV damage.

What's the difference between abrasion protection and cut protection? Abrasion protection guards against wear from rubbing and friction. Cut protection is built specifically to resist sharp edges and punctures.
